The town derives its name from the river that runs through it, and was named so by the Zulu king, Shaka, for its “sweet water”.

  • The Umdoni Bird Sanctuary provides a short nature trail as well as bird watching hides with many indigenous and exotic species including waterfowl, herons and giant and pygmy kingfishers.
