Durban at a glance

Durban is the third-most populous city in South Africa and the largest city in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. Located on the East Coast of South Africa, Durban is the busiest port within the country. Thanks to a subtropical climate, Durban is popular all year round with holidaymakers, as they revel in the warm weather and numerous beaches and attractions. 

There are many incredibly prolific parks, gardens and open spaces for residents to take advantage of all around the buzzing city. The nightlife is exciting, with numerous bars, pubs, restaurants and nightclubs in close proximity of each other.

Amanzimtoti

Located South of the Durban city centre, Amanzimtoti is a popular getaway destination. Its large beaches are perfect for surfing, swimming and fishing. Life moves a touch slower in Amanzimtoti, and lots of people wish to live here and commute to work in Durban.

Umhlanga

Upmarket Umhlanga has become the neighbourhood of choice for several who have moved North from more central areas. In Umhlanga, you’ve got the beach on your doorstep, alongside malls and shopping centres that are just minutes away. With its top schools, great hospitals, business parks, gated estates, beachfront apartments and occasional shops, Umhlanga is convenience personified. Umhlanga offers a lifestyle for everybody, be it the happily retired, the on-the-go business person or the young and stylish student.

Hillcrest

Nestled on the border of the Valley of a Thousand Hills, Hillcrest features a slightly cooler and less humid climate than other parts of Durban. It’s a family-friendly suburb, with many private schools, parks and kid-friendly restaurants. Estate living is extremely common, with many estates boasting well-kept golf courses. The area features a great sense of community and a mixture of country and cosmopolitan lifestyles.

Pinetown

Pinetown is considered to be a multicultural area, as it attracts different types of individuals from all walks of life. It has its own CBD, which is convenient for those that own or add businesses within the area. The suburb has great homes at affordable prices as well as good schools that will appeal to families. 

Geography

Durban is found on the east coast of South Africa by the warm Indian Ocean. The city lies at the mouth of the Umgeni River, which demarcates parts of Durban’s northern city limits, while other sections of the river flow through the town itself. Durban features a natural harbour, Durban Harbour, which is the busiest port in South Africa and is the fourth busiest within the hemisphere.
