Selling your home

Why spring is a great time to sell

Warmer weather, earlier sunrises, later sunsets, greener gardens, flowers sprouting from trees and shrubs: Spring is finally in the air and putting on her annual display, all around us.

We have said before that there is no perfect time to sell, but spring sure does have a lot going for it. There is something about this time of year that fills people with hope for new beginnings – new jobs, new relationships, new adventures and even new homes.

Not only is the weather on your side, allowing you to show your home in its natural splendour, but the timing is great, too. It offers potential buyers the possibility of moving in before they go away for the December holidays and before schools open in January.

To take advantage of the season, take some time to tend to your garden. Clear out all the winter leaves and twigs and perhaps replace the plants that didnt survive the cold weather.

Remember: Don’t break the water restrictions in place in some parts of the country. There are plenty of indigenous plants that can survive with minimal water and are beautiful enough to add that something special to a property.

If you don’t have a garden, then potted plants can and do add character to a home. A strategically placed vase or two of flowers on show day also lets potential buyers know that you’ve put in some effort to impress them.

The most important thing, however, is to give your home a spring clean before showing it. This applies all year round, but especially in spring.

It’s amazing how a simple, thorough cleaning and clearing away the clutter can give a lived-in space a new lease on life. It might even be worth considering putting some of the larger, infrequently used items in your home in storage.

When buyers do come for viewings, open the curtains and windows and let in the spring breeze. The natural light, fresh air and clutter-free spaces give your home the best chance of impressing. None of this is hugely expensive, but will go a long way towards giving the result that you want.
