Gauteng at a glance
Gauteng is the fastest-growing province in South Africa, with its largest city, Johannesburg, also known as the “City of Gold” due to the city’s rich history of gold mining ever since its discovery in 1886 (half of the world’s gold production over history emanates from Johannesburg).
While Gauteng is primarily known as the business hub of South Africa, the province also includes some amazing attractions, such as the Dinokeng Game Reserve, Gauteng’s only Big Five nature reserve; Gold Reef City Theme Park, The Pretoria National Botanical Garden; and the Magaliesberg mountains.
Gauteng’s cultural scene includes several museums, galleries, theatres, historical sites, cultural hubs and a number of music festivals and entertainment.
The province includes several airports – Lanseria, Rand, Grand Central and Wonderboom – that link the province with the rest of the country.
