AMPT – Bryanston’s Answer to Fitness

17 November 2016 | Megan Owen

I work out for the same reasons as most people I know, to be fit, healthy (er), manage stress, and above all, so I can eat delicious food. I’m not working up gradually towards the Comrades or an Ironman. I’m doing what needs to be done to keep going in the right direction while I merrily glug wine and eat out.

I have always wanted to maximize the time I invest in exercise, and have found group training, combining cardio and weights, to be the best version of this. And the best version of this best version, is AMPT.

I believe we have one of the most sophisticated gyms in the world here in Bryanston, in the upmarket environment of The Campus, and without any of the bravado and poser-dom that comes with other high intensity training cultures (you know who you are). This is where down to earth, friendly people come to get fit. And they do!

Simone Israelsohn is the brains, brawn, and cheerful spirit behind AMPT (Advanced Multisport Power Training). Simone ran Sweat1000 Nicolway for four years before breaking away to open her new concept in training with a passionate team of trainers.

An hour AMPT class involves treadmill, Wattbike, and weight sessions of 20 minutes each. Your fitness level is established and a specific running card and USB stick (for Wattbike) set the level/zone for your cardio interval training. You work to gradually take these levels up. This system is simple and allows you to track improvements in your fitness.

This tailored approach also means men and women of completely different ages, body types, and fitness levels can train together in a highly motivating environment. In each class you build strength and tone using different equipment from weights, to bars, to boxing bags, to steps, to sandbags and many more – keeping your muscles guessing.

AMPT classes can supplement any other form of training. Hayley and I often ‘double run’ (spend 40 mins on the treadmill) especially during winter when we don’t want to run outside. Others train for triathlons or focus on cycling. Simone is enthusiasm personified and often gets AMPT teams together to enter Impi challenges and other fun fitness related events. Often for charity and often followed by champagne. Your first class is free, so why not give it a try? You’ll feel amazing . . . when the class is over. 🙂
