10 Best of Bryanston

2 December 2016 | Megan Owen

When you’ve lived in a neighborhood long enough you start establishing your personal supplier list. Our generation keeps companies and brands honest by sharing our experiences and recommendations online.

These are some of the establishments that I have come to trust as best in class in the Bryanston area:

1. Best Facial: Lash & Brow Bar

Phone: 011 463- 8471
Address: 62 St James Crescent Bryanston
Website: http://www.lashandbrowbar.co.za/

Owner, Tamlin, does the best facial I have ever had (R650). She uses Optiphi products (another favourite find of 2016) and the facial includes a light peel which works wonders. I have also been going to Lash & Brow Bar for lashes for many years and highly recommend them (R350 per fill). Gift vouchers available.

2. Best Salad: Fego

Phone: 011 706 0232
Address: Nicolway Shopping Centre, William Nicol Dr, Johannesburg, 2191
Website: http://fegocaffe.co.za/

Hayley and I are always on the hunt for great salads, but we have struggled to find one we like more than the Sweet Chilli Chicken & Halloumi salad at Fego. This involves sweet chilli & sesame-coated chicken strips, halloumi, avocado, grilled peppadew, mixed lettuce, rocket & roasted cherry tomatoes, served with a balsamic vinaigrette. R66

Special mention to the Simply Asia Salmon and Avo salad. R63

3. Best Nutritionist: Karin Paquay

Phone: 082 820 4998
Address: 23 Eaton Road Bryanston

If you need to slim down or just keep track of your body fat, you should have Karin on speed dial. She is no nonsense, cash only, and sends you on your way with a vitamin B jab after consultations. She teaches you how to eat rather than putting you on a diet. R250 per measurement consultation.

4. Best Pizza: Andiccios

Phone: 011 463-5141
Address:5, William Nicol Dr & Grosvenor Rd, Sandton, 2191
Website: http://andiccio24.co.za/

I was already a huge fan due to the 24 hour convenience, delivery, and thin bases. Now their six carb-free base options make them unbeatable. These are pumpkin, zucchini, cauliflower, tomato and olive, garlic, and coriander. The banting bases are slightly less crispy than regular bases, but as owner Jason says, considering what has been taken out, it is a wonder they hold together at all! Make your Sunday night pizza almost guilt free. Recommend: Tomato and olive (cauliflower) base with avo, feta, and mushroom R116

5. Best Freezo: Tasha’s

Phone: 011 706- 2803
Address: U41D, Nicolway Bryanston, Wedgewood Link & William Nicolway Drive, Sandton, Johannesburg, 2196
Website: http://www.tashascafe.com/locations/johannesburg/nicolway/

I would love to say some indie place, but Hayley has been sampling Freezos since she first became addicted to them twelve years ago and she assures me you can’t beat a Tasha’s Freezo – especially if you ask them to make it extra strong. R40

6. Best Coffee: Seattle

Phone: 011 463 – 3753
Address: Grosvenor Crossing, Bryanston 2191 (and some Caltex Stations)
Website: http://www.seattlecoffeecompany.co.za/

Their cappuccinos are hard to beat R23. It would be great if they offered free wifi like Starbucks. So far I have not found a coffee shop in Bryanston that offers unlimited free wifi (however, Andiccio’s does). Special mention to the cappuccinos from Hobart Spar (where they hire deaf baristas) R17.95 (small) and from Nicolway Woolies Cafe R24 (tall).

7. Best Massage: Day Life Spa

Phone: 011 465 7777
Address: 2 Design Quarter District, Leslie Ave East
Website: http://www.lifedayspafourways.co.za/

A massage is my favourite gift and I have experienced some wonderful massages in spas around the world. The Day Life Spa is in the premier league due to the fabulous facility and the incredibly skilled therapists. I can’t imagine a better Christmas present. Recommend: Aromatherapy Massage – R690 for an hour.

8. Best Handyman: Arnot Acker

Phone: 082 465 9867

In the olden days these were husband tasks but in the absence of one of these I wait until I have 4/5 odd jobs around the house and then get Arnot in to get them sorted out. He will source any parts you need and is very multi-skilled and reasonable.

9.Best Spray Tan: Pure Esthetics

Phone: 011 784 1168
Address: 117 Virginia Ave, Parkmore
Website: http://www.pureesthetics.co.za/

When you don’t want to run the risk of looking like a streaky carrot, go to Pure Esthetics for a Fake Bake spray tan (R380). Christina (owner) and her team also offer a fantastic array of anti-aging facials and treatments as well as nails.

10. Best Car Guy: Bob

Phone: Bob 011 463 2995
Address: off Wilton Road Bryanston

My family have a policy of driving paid off cars, thus we need to service them and get anything fixed outside motor plans. Having a reliable and trustworthy car guy who isn’t going to take you for a ride can save you thousands. Bob is no nonsense, works from a ‘home garage’ and has been keeping our cars running for years.
