Leadhome has just launched in Bloemfontein, and local property expert Lizelle Dykman is thrilled to share some of the highlights of her laid-back city.

There is something very special about Bloemfontein, according to Lizelle Dykman. It might have something to do with the relaxed lifestyle, the friendliness and hospitality of the people or the fact that it has such a wonderful mix of history and contemporary life that makes it such a comfortable place to call home.

Bloemfontein has a well-situated university and the bustling student community adds to the many layers of this diverse and interesting city, that also happens to be the judicial capital of South Africa.

For Lizelle, a lover of dogs, horses and wide, open spaces, the great outdoors is a highlight of her city. She enjoys taking part in various outdoor activities during her spare time. But, being a true Free Stater, she also loves nothing more than a braai on the weekend with her family, a past time enjoyed with friends and colleagues alike.

She might love the outdoors but is not averse to some of the great malls and urban attractions of her city, including the Loch Logan Waterfront, Mimosa Mall and many others. A keen lover of coffee – Lizelle loves to go to Amici in the Waterfront or Iewers Nice in Westdene for her favourite brew with clients or friends. A good meal at the Waterfront Ocean Basket is a delicious win in Lizelle’s book.

She has 12 years of experience in the property industry and says there are homes on offer in Bloemfontein which offers real value for money. Because the city has a number of excellent schools, it’s a good place for families to settle.

There are quite a few highlights in the area, here are a few of Lizelle’s favourites:

  • Oliewenhuis Art Museum – voted by TripAdvisor as one of the great things to do in Bloemfontein. The museum is located in a beautiful Neo-Dutch style mansion with beautiful grounds. It is here that you can see a unique collection of South African art from a variety of cultures. Lizelle points out that there are a number of notable art museums and contemporary galleries in the city – an absolute must for those who love creativity and the arts.
  • Free State National Botanical Garden: Situated on the outskirts of the city, this sprawling botanical garden is ‘the green heart’ of the city. View the natural vegetation of the area – with its beautiful Karee and wild olive trees situated against a backdrop of dolomite koppies.
  • Naval Hill: For great views of the city visit Naval Hill, it will give you some perspective on the urban landscape of Bloemfontein. Take a pic at the statue of Nelson Mandela as he gazes over the city. Naval Hill is situated within the Franklin Game Reserve, so you might get to spot some rather tame wildlife. There is a jogging route from Naval Hill and Park Runs take place here on the weekends. The Lamont Hussey Observatory (aka the Naval Hill Planetarium) is a great place to stargaze.
  • Die Boeremark Langenhoven Park: If you are like Lizelle and just love markets, then try this farmers’ market where you will find the best local produce. The kids will have a blast on the jumping castles and pony rides. Adults can dive into local flavours and Lizelle highly recommends the coffee. Westdene Craft Market is another market to consider if you love the market experience.
  • Loch Logan Waterfront: Yes, a mall is a mall is a mall, but the Loch Logan Waterfront is also a fun space to do some shopping – all the big names are there, and you can grab a quick bite at one of the many restaurants.
  • Sports Lovers can’t get enough of what is on offer in and around Bloemfontein, home to the Toyota Stadium (previously known as Vodacom Park) where some great sporting events take place. There is also the Action Sports Indoor Sports Venue Bloemfontein where Action Cricket, Action Netball and Action Soccer all happen on a regular basis. If you are a passionate rugby fan you might want to visit the Choet Visser Rugby Museum.

For Lizelle, her new position as local property expert with Leadhome is the perfect opportunity to work with buyers and sellers in getting the best value for money, in this wonderful city that Lizelle calls home.
